How To Get Started

Thank you for considering breeding your mare to Amorex. Here's some ideas to help you get started:

DVD
Would you like to receive our free DVD showing Amorex, Silvano and many of their foals? Please Send the DVD

Spring-Special
Would you like to book the Spring-Special, and send the paperwork at a later date? You can pay the booking fee by Paypal, and send the contract along at your convenience. We will acknowledge holding your reservation for breeding at the Winter-Special price.

Or you can send your check for the booking fee. $300, to Mary Baechler, Magpie Farm, 1414 Dazet Rd. Yakima, Wa, 98908 (U.S.A.)
•Then just send an e-mail letting us know that you are reserving a breeding on the Winter Special.
•At your convenience (but before the Spring!) print and sign two copies of the contract
For contract please click here

•Please include a copy of your mare's papers, and a photo (or you can e mail me a photo at your convenience).
•If your mare is not registered, please include whatever breed info you have on her. If she is unregistered, I will also need a description, i.e. "bay, white snip, sock on left hind" for when I send in the breeding report.
• You can send in the contract first, and e mail or mail the photos later.

Mare Care Prior To Breeding
We recommend that you worm your mare and do all her vaccinations prior to breeding. Although vaccines and wormers are supposed to be fine for mares in early pregnancy, it just makes good sense to have things as natural as possible for the early stages of pregnancy. Be sure to consult with your veterinarian for worming and vaccine advice.

I like to feed a combination of good grass hay with maybe 20% alfalfa (when I can get it!).For mares that are conceiving or in pregnancy, I prefer to feed as close to free choice as possible.

Mare Health Form
Please include the Mare Health Form with your breeding contract; or you can send it along before needing your first shipment.Mare Health Form please click here

Culture and Cytology
When you are close to breeding time, and your mare is in heat, we do suggest you have a reproductive check and what is called a "culture and cytology". Although we are not requiring the Culture and Cytology, it is very helpful to get done. Please ask your vet about it and then you and your vet can decide. Please bear in mind, every year a few mares turn up with uterine infections, and their owners are always surprised! If your mare has any history of infertility or uterine clearance problems, it might be a good idea to get a culture and cytology done. This culture can be done on the same heat cycle you are inseminating on... the mare does need to be in heat to get a culture (well it is much easier on her).
And yes, maiden mares can have infections. Of course, the majority of mares have good uterine health.

When To Breed

In the Spring, just let me know when you are thinking of breeding. If you are in a northern state, the early heats (late March, early April), will be transitional heats--sort of the mare's body warming up but not quite there. Those follicles are less likely to result in a conception. It is nice to wait til maybe mid-April to start breeding; I often wait til May so it will be warm when the foal comes. This is much closer to the way nature meant things to be for mares; in the wild most mustang foals are born in April, May and June. One theriogenologist I worked for did a study of mustang mares (just imagine how exciting that would be!) and found that every mare that could be pregnant, was pregnant. He also felt the natural breeding time was more in the later spring/early summer.

When your mare is close to breeding (maybe two weeks before), please send along the remainder of the breeding fees. Please see the Contract for more info. Please let me know when your mare goes into heat (and that you want to breed on that cycle), so I plan for it.

What Days Do We Ship?
We collect and ship Mondays through Fridays; we only have Fed Ex to ship for us, and they do not go on the weekends. If you are nearby, we can collect for you on the weekends. Please call by 8 pm the night before you need a shipment. We can sometimes ship by bus on the weekends, if you really need it and are in Washington, Oregon or Idaho. However, we need to hear about it very early, and Greyhound is sometimes less-than-optimal when it comes to actually getting the Equitainer there. So we prefer to ship by Fed Ex whenever possible...

Best regards,

Mary

p.s. all questions are good questions; feel free to call me if there are any questions I can help with!
